When Should You Pierce Your Daughter's Ears?

Lauren Elizabeth just turned five years old.  Our family was in Texas for her birthday so we didn't get to have her party with her friends yet.  It's coming this Friday.  Do you know the only thing she says that she wants for her party?
"All of my friends from school have their ears pierced and I want to get mine pierced too."
    -great.
My mom is pretty old school and didn't let me get my ears pierced until I was like, 90.  I don't know that I feel too opposed to the idea however.
Half of me thinks, if she's old enough to genuinely know what she's asking and wants to get them done...then she's ready.  The other half of me thinks...she's five.  She could genuinely want a unicorn that eats rainbow flavored cotton candy.
I don't want her to hurt and I remember how it felt to get mine pierced.  I surely don't want her ears to get infected either.  On the other hand, is it really THAT big of a deal?  Babies have their ears pierced for Pete's sake.
I don't know.  We'll see how it goes and what we'll do about it.  Why do I feel like this is the first of many adventures when it comes to having a little girl?

We asked Miss Emma if she wanted hers pierced...today is her 5th birthday. ..she quickly said no because she didn't like the needles.

I got mine for Christmas in 6th grade which was wayyyy too late. It didn't feel as special more like I was catching up with all my friends. My next door neighbors daughters got their ears pierced for thier First Communion gift. I like that idea, it's special but they're in 1st or 2nd grade so they can appreciate it.

WAIT! Let her be a little girl without the pain of growing up too soon.
She has no idea that they poke a hole through the ear lobe with a needle. There are plenty of magnet earrings she can play with. Teach her to be a leader rather than a follower. She can do it later
as Jess said, when she will know how to care for them.

We ended up doing with our girls the same thing my parents did with me - age 8. Their reason was that by then I would be old enough to be responsible (with their oversight) for the care of my ears and earrings. Now that I am a parent I see the wisdom in their decision, although I felt the wait was forever at the time, after all 2nd or 3rd grade is SO OLD!! :) For our girls it became a right of passage and they often did better than I did at remembering to take care of the newly pierced ears. We still have one (teenager) who decided she would pass on the whole thing, some who were fine to wait for the time, and others who thought the time would never come. For us, this worked well with minimal fuss because they knew what to expect and what was expected of them.

We did Cassidy's at 8, and I would say it was perfect. IT HURT, but she got through it. She was VERY diligent about cleaning them 2x a day.

I think Caroline was 6 or 7 and I can tell you that one ear got infected so we pulled out the earrings and let them close up, waited another year and re-pierced, so we've been through it twice. :) My thoughts are to wait until she is willing to be responsible to help take care of them. If that is 5, then so be it. Also, if there are 2 ladies available to pierce both ears at the same time, that's even better! Good luck!!

I hope the party was a blast, with or without pierce ears! My mom didn't let me get mine done until I was 13. I feel bad that our wedding threw a kink in birthday party plans, but Lauren Elizabeth was a beautiful flower girl! And she looked like she enjoyed herself. Preston made quite the handsome ring bearer too. Thank you so much for coming out to Texas! It was awesome to finally meet all of you!
