American Girl Dolls and Cyber Monday

    I hope someone can help me. Help me understand how one doll can cost so much?
    The irony is, after having three boys in a row, I would've given anything to be able to buy just one baby doll. Now that our first grade little girl is begging for one though, I'm in shock.
    How and why are American Girl dolls so expensive? What am I missing? Not only that, but our daughter has this whole world of American Girl dolls she's dreaming of for Christmas. Clothes, matching outfits, accessories...she knows the exact doll she's in love with and has talked of nothing else for weeks.
    I was grumbling about it at work today, when my friend, Kelly mentioned today there's a 20% off code for Cyber Monday. (It's GIFT20 if you're thinking about one, too.)
    For now, I'll sit at my computer and ponder. Is this a childhood wish that will be cherished forever, or will this be a phase that's not even worth getting into.
    Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated, as I stare at this doll while she smiles and waves at me, tauntingly.

I was lucky to score an American Girl (AG) doll at 50% off through the Today Show's Jill's Deals and Steals a couple of years ago and another was received from Grandma as a Xmas gift. 20% off is a good deal, but I hear you on the prices! If I can get a good sale I buy accessories, clothes and pets through AG, but only if I can get a good deal.

Typically I buy accessories and clothes at Target. They carry the brand,Our Generation and the accessories and clothes work very well with AG dolls. I have found them to often be of a higher quality than AG products (maybe not the dolls) AND I love the mission and story behind the company. A portion of all sales goes to Free the Children Power of a Girl initiative and their philosophy is amazing!!

Price comparison...my kid likes the diner. AG $275, Our Generation on sale was $75 which I snatched before Thanksgiving during their 25% off a toy sale. The car at AG is $350 and Target I got around $60 with the sale AND it has lights and a working radio (plus it is pink vs. AG's blue). You can also get a further 5% discount if you have their Red card. So yea...2 big toys for less than half of one at AG.

Target also had a sale over Black Friday weekend for buy one Our Generation product, get one 50% off.

Yes, they are pricey but if your daughter is ready for one, part of her knows just how special it is. We only give my daughter clothes/accessories on her bday or xmas and haven't done any of the big items like the car. We have also found clothes at booths at fairs, if your mall has one I bet someone is selling doll stuff.
Beyond the 'stuff' I love the fictional history that goes with the original dolls. They can be so empowering for young girls. That to me is priceless.
