When Should your Kids get a Cell Phone?

    Our nine and ten year old boys have both recently started asking for their own cell phones. The latest encounter went a little something like this...(hit it)
    (Standing in the check out aisle of the grocery store)
    Christian: Mom, Dad? Can I get a phone now?
    Me: Sure buddy. (My husband shoots a grin at me.)
    Ethan: What? He CAN? What about me? Can I get one too?
    Me: Yes. You both can. In fact, we'll get one for all four of you and it will be a party.
    (Lady standing in line behind us begins to chuckle.)
    Christian and Ethan together: MOOOOOOM! ALL of our friends have them! It's not fair!
    This conversation has become somewhat of a broken record in our home. I USED to think that the, "All of our friends have a phone so why can't we) rational was just a simple tactic...but then I realized...a lot of their friends actually do have cell phones.
    This surprised me.
    I can see the pros and cons on both accounts. I just don't think it's time though.
    For now at least, I keep reminding myself that it's almost summer. I'm hoping that the swimming pool and outdoor play will replace the monotony of the dreaded, annoying, incessant...cell phone conversation. grrrrrr.....

Well, tell them when THEY can purchase the phone, AND pay for
the monthly bills, you would be glad to let them buy one! All they want to do is play games at this age anyway. And when they are teens I would constantly worry that they would text/phone while driving! A plain phone that they can take with them when they go places to call you, or have you reach them is a good answer at that point. Children watch too much TV and sit around playing games rather than getting fresh air and enjoying their childhood.

We gave the kids their first phone when they began to play organized sports where they would ride a school bus to and from the games. It helped out when we couldn't make the games and instead of waiting for hours on a late bus at the school our kids could let us know they were running late. When my daughter went to DC on her 8th grade trip I couldn't chaperone. What I did was set up the "track me" feature on her phone and I was able to see where she was in DC. One day I checked on her and I enabled the satellite feature and saw she was at the capital, 15 mins later she text me saying they just finished their group pic. It was nice to see where she was when I couldn't be there.
