Monster Parents

There's such a big difference in the relationships between our kids.  Our older two get along well enough, but the younger two fight.  A lot.  I don't mean, bicker and fuss over things...I mean - WWF, wrestle mania, knock down, drag out, fight.
Adam and I have racked our brains trying to figure out how to get them to stop.  Time outs, separating them into different rooms, not allowing them to play together...nothing works.  Within about ten to twenty minutes...regardless of anything we've done, it's on...and the fighting begins.
Yesterday, Lauren and Preston were in his room and they began yelling over a toy.  "It's MINE!"  "NO!  I had it FIRST!"  (ding, ding!)
Out of complete exhaustion, Adam and I decided to try something that we've never done before.  Become Monsters...literally.  We snuck up to their door and put our hands up like bear claws then ran in screaming.  At first it scared the bejeebies out of them until they knew that we were playing.
Within minutes, they were screaming and laughing while trying to run around the room to get away from us.  Then the oddest thing happened...they became - a team.  Preston would jump on Adam's back if he got Lauren and Lauren would nail me with a pillow if I tickled Preston.
By the end of the Monster jam, the two little ones were holding hands, running and laughing around the room...while trying to protect each other instead of fighting.
Into that evening, they actually played better than they had in months.  When they did start to argue, Adam and I would put our monster claws up and growl, causing them to scream and laugh...forgetting about their argument.
Granted, this method probably shouldn't be used in public without expecting quite a few stares, but at least for one day, in this house...it kept the peace.  Grrrrrrrrrrr

When my kids start fighting over a toy and have problems taking turns, I set the kitchen timer for five minutes. When it starts beeping, they have to swap whatever toy they are fighting over. It works well for me :) Good luck!

OMG!! I love the monster thing!! But wanted to share one I heard about and haven't had the opportunity to apply yet (sick that I have been waiting for them to fight so I can use this because it seems like it will be fun... for me), and it works on bigger kids too, although you can use this in public to get the total max embarrassing effect. Get one of Dad's white t-shirts (or a larger one depending on how big the kids are) label the front with huge flashy pretty letters whatever, and write, "Our Get-A-Long Shirt" when they fight, they BOTH go in the shirt, one arm whole each (may need to make head hole bigger) and they stay there till they can be nice to each other and generally get along, it makes them decide as a pair to knock it off, the longer it takes, the longer they are stuck in the shirt... together. It makes them work together too, they each only have one accessible arm, so even something as simple as getting a drink becomes a training session on getting along together! And as an added bonus, if one is less cooperative with the other than you would normally like, this will cure that, not only are you punishing them for not behaving, they can punish each other longer by not compromising, which causes even more friendly to convince the not compromising one to be nice so they can get out. LOL Seems like a legal form of torture to me!! I have been chomping at the bit to try it!! Darn kids don't fight enough at my house. But I have thought about using the concept to get there bedrooms clean, make them ware my choice in shirts to school till there rooms are clean... The 10 year old will be fun cause she has reached the age where cute animal or cartoons on her clothes makes her feel like a little kid....she HATES it. I can work with that!!

It is funny how acting monsters brought them so close. This is what we call family. We may fight on the silliest things and be the best of enemies but whenever an outside threat comes we stick for each other.

Yes to that Elena!!! I'll never forget the time our two older boys were much younger. They too would fight with each other quite a bit. They were at a birthday party once and another kid wouldn't let our one son go to the bathroom (he kept blocking the door...boys.) Our other son went flying to the rescue. It's so nice when they stick together!
