My Dad played soccer through college so I think he's pretty happy about it. My hometown is a football town though and I don't think I had ever even seen a game of soccer until I went off to college. It's a completely foreign sport to me.
The boys are chomping at the bit to get out on the field though. They can hardly see straight. Our son Preston played when he was barely four and has never stopped talking about it. Now they're asking when they'll get their uniforms, who their coach will be, etc.
My Mom swears that they have soccer blood in them because she loves the fact that we're related to the Captain of the woman's US Olympic soccer team. Evidently, Christie Rampone's Great Grandfather Preston (note the name) was my Great Grandma's brother in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, where my Mom was born and raised. This makes Christie our bazillionth cousin or something. My Mom thinks that this is the coolest thing EVER even though we have never even met this girl and she wouldn't know us from George. Regardless, I would have to agree with my Mom, it is pretty cool.
So, as our boys get ready to do whatever it is that you do out on the soccer field this fall, I hope they'll make our distant cousin who we don't know, proud. We're excited for the Olympics this year and we're eager to cheer her on.
It will be fun to see the kids play in the fall, too. I always thought that having a house full of boys, we would have our own little football team but it looks like they have other plans.
No matter what they decide to do, one thing's for sure...we'll always be their biggest fans.
